Areas of Expertise
My role is to protect the rights of my clients and provide a platform for sound decision making and business growth. For me, it's about enabling clients to realise their dreams by making strategic commercial decisions." Michael Smith - Senior Associate Patent & Trade Marks Attorney, Solicitor
From early on, Michael showed a keen intellect and an enquiring mind. These qualities have stayed with him throughout his entire professional life.
Michael started out his studies with a combined Science/Arts degree, taking a broad range of subjects, from French to history, physics and mathematics. This period of exploration eventually led him to channel his varied knowledge through adding law to his degree. From that moment on, he has never looked back.
While Michael thrived in a competitive academic environment, he was also driven by a desire to help others. Between a university exchange in Montreal and completing his Postgraduate Diploma in Physics (nanotechnology) with a first class honours thesis, he undertook volunteer work in Guatemala, where he taught English to kids who were living amongst the city’s landfill. With a passion for human rights, he later spent a short period conducting research into how IP law could assist in protecting the rights and Traditional Knowledge of Indigenous Australians. It is an area he hopes to further investigate in the future.
It took an early career in personal injury law for Michael to realise his passion lay in patent law. As an Australian Registered Patent Attorney and Registered Trade Marks Attorney, Michael has developed an extensive practice in all areas of patent protection and prosecution in Australia and internationally, as well as cases relating to trade marks and designs. His specialty lies across a range of areas, predominantly medical technologies and a broad range of mechanical devices, on top of electrical engineering, computer implemented inventions, and mining technology. Motivated by helping people turn their ideas into a reality, Michael is dedicated to advising his clients on how to best protect their rights and make strategic commercial decisions.
Outside of work, Michael has his hands full as a devoted father to two young kids. He grew up on the coast, so when he can get away for some time alone, you’ll find him swimming at the beach or going for a quiet bushwalk.
